Laurene Powell Jobs, who is the widow of Steve Jobs, former Apple CEO, has been named as the newest edition to Stanford University’s board of trustees. Laurene earned a masters in business from the school in 1991 and will now serve a five year period on the board of trustees. Both Laurene and Steve Jobs have always expressed their willingness to make a difference to education an its policy.
Laurene’s term begins in October and she will be joining another 32 individuals on the board, which includes the co-founder of the popular search engine Yahoo, Jerry Yang. Ron Johnson, who is the former Apple Retail VP is also a board member.
This isn’t Laurene’s first involvement within the education sector. Not only is she the board of College Track’s president, she also founded Emerson Collective, which supports entrepreneurs within education. College Track focuses on aiding disadvantaged students to stay in and finish their education. She is also currently serving on the board of directors of NewSchools Venture Fund and Conservation International.
The board of trustee’s chair, Steven Denning, said that Laurene will make a great addition to the board. “Her work to improve and augment K-12 education and work with disadvantaged students in East Palo Alto, Oakland and other communities around the nation is an inspiration to us all, as is her active role in conservation and environmental issues globally.” Denning said. He also went on to explain that her “extensive experience” within the education sector and her commitment to the organizations she supports makes her an ideal candidate for the position.
Laurene actually met Steve at Stanford University while she was studying at the school’s Graduate School of Business. Steve was conducting a speech to her class at the time.
Before embarking on her current ventures, Laurene worked at Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs as an investment banker.
